Public school teachers to take subject methodology course in "Active learning of subjects"

Magda Maghradze, Executive Director of Millennium Challenge Account – Georgia", and Sonia Sharigian, the acting Director of the Georgian mission of the US Millennium Challenge Corporation, held a meeting with the public school teachers who will take the subject methodology course "Active learning of subjects” within the framework of the Teacher and School Director Professional Development Project.

The Teacher and School Director Professional Development Project, which is implemented by the LEPL National Center for Teacher Professional Development, has already trained 179 trainers who will conduct the subject methodology course in "Active teaching of subjects" for more than 7000 teachers of all public schools across Georgia.

The subject methodology course will be conducted for chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, geography and English language teachers and will provide modeling of real learning environment; In the course of the training, teachers will be encouraged to experience the basic principles of student-oriented teaching approaches in order to directly see the advantage and to use active teaching strategies in practice.

The training module consists of 24 contact hours. After the completion of the training, teachers will have the opportunity to discuss new strategies and approaches at workshops, and thus facilitate their introduction in the classroom.

Currently, trainings for Mathematics and English language trainers are in progress for 48 trainers in Batumi.

The subject training course pays a special attention to the professional development of teachers and acquisition of the strategies and approaches that ensure students' motivation to learn exact and natural sciences.
Knowledge and skills acquired at the trainings will enable teachers to make the learning process more fun, interactive, practical, and adjust to the needs and interests of the XXI century student.

The subject methodology trainings will be conducted across Georgia in August and September 2017. The opportunity for professional development will be given to more than 7000 VIII-XII grade teachers of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geography and English Language, who have already taken general professional skills modules in 2016-2017 within the Teacher and School Director Professional Development Project.

Representatives of ethnic minorities will also be involved in the professional development activities planned within the project; Accordingly, training materials are being translated specially for them and Russian, Armenian and Azeri trainers trained.

The target group of the project is more than 18000 in-service public school teachers of exact and natural sciences, English and Geography for VIII-XII grades. The teachers will take the training in two flows. The full course of the professional development for the first flow of teachers (general professional and subject methodology) began in October 2016 and will be completed in September 2017; The second flow of teachers will take the same training course in September 2017 - September 2018.

The Project “Millennium Challenge Account – Georgia” is funded by MCC and is implemented by the LEPL Teacher Professional Development Center, with the expert support of the international consulting company IREX and cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia.
