Francophonie International Day was celebrated at the National Center for Teacher
Professional Development. The event was organized by the French Institute in Georgia
and was opened by the Education and Sciences Deputy Minister- Lia Gigauri, National
Center for Teacher Professional Development Director-Giorgi Machebeli and
French Institute in Georgia Director- Mr. Jean-Yves Lavoir.
School and university students, winners of various
French language contests organized by the French Institute in Georgia had been
awarded at the event, 2 French language teachers had been announced the winners
of French state scholarship for a brief teaching internship in France.
The event had been attended by the French Ambassador
in Georgia-PascalMeunier,
Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to Georgia- Mr.LukasBeg
linger, Deputy State Minister on European and Euro –Atlantic Integration and
other diplomatic mission representatives.
French language teachers from various school and Institutes and their
students.

International organization is comprised of 57 member and 20 observer countries
(Georgia among them). One third of
population the UN member countries speak French and more than 220 million
people speak French at 5 continents.
French language population is 2-nd largest after the German language
population in Europe.
